DESIGN TECHNOLOGY

It is our intent for DT to offer children the chance to use creative thinking and design within a defined purpose and tangible outcome. Through a variety of creative and practical activities, pupils are taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in a process of designing and making. They work in a range of contexts through our topic based approach which allows for cross curricular links to be made.

The curriculum champion for Design Technology is Mrs Emily Tongeman.  To find out more about how Rowledge delivers this subject please contact them using the following email addresses:

PROGRESSION & ASSESSMENT

We have aligned a progression of skills and knowledge with the programmes of study for each year group.

The documents below outline this progression and are used when assessing the ongoing progress of pupils.

PUPIL VOICE

We regularly conference pupils to gain an awareness of their attitudes to a range of curriculum subjects.  Below is a sample of thoughts from a range of pupils about how they feel about the Science curriculum at Rowledge.

KS1 PUPIL

"I like making things.  When I grow up I would like to be an inventor.

My favourite is making things out of recycling because it is good for the world and I get to make something new."

LOWER KS2 PUPIL

DT is very fun.  I like woodwork best, especially using the saws!

Last year I was so proud when I made my Flintstone Car - I couldn't believe it worked as well as a real toy car!"

UPPER KS2 PUPIL

"I like how creative it is.  I love the designing products to be exactly as I imagine them.

Last year I worked on a Mayan Mask.  My final design was exactly what I had hoped it would be.  I still have it up at home!"

YEAR GROUP OVERVIEWS

Below are our Year Group overviews, which provide a sense of the curriculum experience children will recieve in each year group.  We recognise that each cohort are individuals and promote flexibility in themes to meet the required subject objectives.  You can see the range of concepts taught across the school by reviewing these documents.
